8. Little Birds on a Branch Mobile

8

There is a reason birds appear in so many nurseries: they are charming, they suggest movement, and they work in nearly any color scheme.

Cut three to five small bird bodies, each with a separate wing. Stitch the wing on with a single line of thread so it sits slightly raised, then sew two body layers together and stuff them lightly. For the branch, use a piece of felt-covered wire, a thin wooden dowel, or a real twig that has been cleaned and sealed. Hang the branch from the hoop and suspend birds beneath it on short lengths of twine.

You’ll need: felt in two or three colors, embroidery floss, fiberfill, twine, a hoop, and your branch material. Time runs about three hours.

Vary the bird sizes and colors to create a small flock effect. A version with three birds and a few tiny felt leaves is quick, while five birds with detailed wings takes longer but fills the space beautifully.

💡 Pro Tip: If you use a natural twig, bake it at a low temperature for about an hour and let it cool completely to remove any hidden insects before bringing it into the nursery.
