6. Elegant Velvet and Tassel Runner

Velvet turns a holiday table into something special. A velvet runner with tassel trim feels luxurious for Christmas Eve, New Year’s Eve, or an anniversary dinner that happens to fall during the holidays.
- Materials: Velvet or velveteen, satin lining, tassel fringe, sewing machine, walking foot, pins, hand-sewing needle.
- Time: About 2 hours.
- Difficulty: Intermediate.
Cut velvet and lining to the same size. Place them right sides together with the tassel fringe sandwiched between the layers along the short ends, pointing inward. Sew around the perimeter, leaving an opening for turning. Turn the runner right side out, press carefully, and slipstitch the opening closed. Velvet can shift, so pin generously and sew slowly.
Choose deep emerald, burgundy, navy, or charcoal for a rich holiday look. Display it with gold chargers, crystal glasses, and low floral arrangements. A budget-friendly alternative is to cut a velvet tablecloth or curtain panel to size. Avoid pressing velvet directly with a hot iron; use a needle board or a thick towel and steam from the wrong side. This runner is not ideal for heavy everyday use, but it rewards careful handling.
💡 Pro Tip: If you cannot find tassel fringe, use a strip of beaded trim or velvet ribbon for a subtler edge.
