4. Quilted Christmas Tree Runner

4

A quilted runner adds heirloom texture to a holiday table. This project uses simple straight-line quilting and an appliqué tree motif, so it is approachable even if you have not quilted before.

Gather cotton fabric for the top, a backing fabric, thin cotton batting, a tree template, fusible web, rotary cutter, ruler, and sewing machine. Cut the top and backing to your runner size, then cut batting slightly smaller. Fuse tree shapes to the top fabric in a row or staggered pattern. Layer the backing, batting, and top, then quilt straight lines across the runner using a walking foot if you have one. Bind the edges with bias tape or fold the backing to the front and stitch it down.

Plan for a weekend afternoon, and expect intermediate difficulty. Use green cottons in different shades for the trees, or keep the trees neutral and let the quilting shine. Display this runner on a dining table with white candles and wooden stars, or drape it over a sideboard. If you want a smaller commitment, make matching quilted mug rugs from the leftover fabric. A common mistake is quilting too densely at first; start with lines 2–3 inches apart and add more if you like the look.
