2. Reversible Thanksgiving-to-Christmas Runner

2

If you host back-to-back holidays, a reversible runner saves storage space and gives you two looks in one. One side can feature autumn leaves, pumpkins, or harvest plaids. The other side can switch to evergreens, snowflakes, or classic red-and-green checks.

You will need two rectangles of cotton fabric cut to the same size, plus matching thread, pins, and a sewing machine. Place the fabrics right sides together and sew around the perimeter with a half-inch seam allowance, leaving a 4–6 inch opening for turning. Clip the corners, turn the runner right side out, press the edges, and topstitch all the way around to close the opening and give the runner a crisp finish.

This project takes about 90 minutes and suits an advanced beginner. Choose medium-weight cottons so the runner lies flat without bulky bulk. For a more polished look, add a thin flange or piping between the layers. Display the Thanksgiving side with amber glassware and woven placemats, then flip it over for Christmas dinner with red plates and pinecone accents. If you are short on time, use iron-on hem tape for the entire project and skip the machine entirely.
