9. Vintage Shutter Ladder with Chippy Paint

Old shutters already have the narrow shape and character of a ladder. Paired with wooden rungs, they create a vintage piece that looks collected rather than crafted. This idea is ideal for farmhouse, cottage, and shabby-chic living rooms.
Materials:
- Two vintage shutters, similar height
- Four to five wooden slats or dowels cut to fit between the shutters
- Wood screws, small L-brackets, wood glue
- Clear wax or polyurethane to seal chippy paint
- Soft cloth and mild soap for cleaning
Clean the shutters gently and let them dry. Decide which side will face the room. Attach the rungs to the back of the shutters using small brackets and screws so the front stays clean. Seal the paint with clear wax to keep it from flaking onto blankets. Lean the ladder against the wall and add pads to the bottom.
Time: 1–2 hours. Difficulty: Beginner to intermediate, depending on the condition of the shutters.
Style it with white, oatmeal, or faded floral throws. This ladder looks lovely near a window with sheer curtains or beside a wooden bench. If you cannot find real shutters, look for shutter-style doors at a salvage yard or use two narrow pallet boards with slats. Avoid using shutters with lead paint; if you are unsure, seal them completely or choose another material.
