2. Leaning Library Ladder with Copper Pipe Rungs

If you want a ladder that feels a little more collected and less rustic, copper pipe rungs change the whole mood. The warm metal against wood gives a library or loft feel without the cost of custom furniture. It is a good choice for living rooms with leather furniture, dark shelving, or exposed brick.
Materials:
- Two hardwood boards, 1×4 or 2×3, cut to 6 feet
- Five copper pipes, ½-inch diameter, cut to 17 inches
- Copper end caps or elbow fittings for a finished look
- Wood glue, 2-inch wood screws, epoxy or construction adhesive
- Sandpaper, wood stain or clear sealer, fine steel wool
- Rubber pads for the base
Cut the rails and mark the rung positions. Drill holes slightly wider than the copper pipe. Slide each pipe through the holes and secure with epoxy on the inside of the rails. Add end caps so the pipe edges are smooth and safe. Sand and finish the wood before inserting the pipes for a cleaner result.
Time: 3–4 hours. Difficulty: Intermediate, mostly because of measuring and cutting pipe.
Style this one with a linen throw, a wool scarf, and a small stack of magazines on the lower rung. It looks especially good in a reading nook. If copper is outside your budget, paint PVC pipe with metallic copper spray paint and seal it well. Just be aware that painted PVC can chip if it gets heavy use.
