8. Animal Silhouette Toy Box

This is the idea that gets the biggest reaction from kids. Instead of a plain rectangle, the box is shaped like an animal — an elephant with a trunk-shaped handle, a whale with a tail fin, or a dinosaur with a row of plywood spikes along the back.
The construction is simpler than it looks. Build a standard rectangular box, then add shaped plywood panels to the front and back to create the silhouette. Cut the shapes with a jigsaw, sand the curves smooth, and paint the whole thing in a single bold colour with a contrasting interior.
Materials: 3/4-inch plywood for the silhouette panels, 1×10 boards for the box sides, jigsaw, sandpaper, paint, soft-close hinges or a lift-off lid.
Time: four to five hours. Difficulty: intermediate, mostly because of the curved cuts.
Because the silhouette panels are thin and wide, they need support. Screw them into the box sides from the inside, and keep the overall height under about 20 inches so the shape does not become top-heavy. For an elephant, add a fabric ear on each side; for a whale, a felt water spout on the lid.
Display-wise, this one works best standing alone against a plain wall — it is a statement piece, and a busy backdrop dilutes it. Match the paint to the room’s accent colour so it ties in rather than shouting over everything else.
