3. Rolling Toy Box on Casters

3

For a playroom where the action moves from corner to corner, a rolling toy box is the practical answer. The build is essentially the classic chest, but with a reinforced base and locking casters bolted through a hardwood runner instead of straight into plywood.

Use 3/4-inch plywood for the base and glue a 1×3 strip along the underside of each short end, then bolt the casters through those strips. This spreads the load so the screws do not tear out when a child pushes the box across carpet. Choose casters with a brake lever, and go for rubber wheels rather than hard plastic if you have wood floors — rubber rolls quieter and marks less.

Materials: plywood and 1×12 boards, four locking casters, 1×3 hardwood strips, wood glue, screws, paint or stain.

Time: three to four hours. Difficulty: beginner to intermediate.

Paint the box in a colour that matches the room, then add a stencilled shape or a stripe along the bottom edge. A rolling box also works as a mobile art cart if you divide the inside with a couple of thin plywood dividers — one section for paper and markers, one for blocks.

💡 Pro Tip: Leave the casters off until the very last step. It is much easier to paint a box that is sitting flat on the floor than one that keeps rolling away from you.
