9. Clay Saucer and Sand Butterfly Puddler

9

This is a variation of the pebble puddler, but it uses a clay saucer and sand to create a more natural, earthy look. It’s perfect for gardeners who want a subtle, integrated feature.

  • Materials: A clay saucer, play sand, small pebbles, water, and a handful of compost.
  • Time: 5 minutes
  • Difficulty: Very easy

Mix the sand and compost in the saucer, then smooth it down. Add the pebbles on top, pressing them gently into the sand. Moisten the mixture with water until it’s damp but not soggy. Place the saucer in a sunny spot in your garden, near nectar plants. Butterflies will land on the pebbles and extract minerals from the damp sand.

You can add a small piece of bark or a few fallen leaves for a woodland feel. If you want to attract more species, add a tiny pinch of sea salt to the water—but don’t overdo it. Refresh the water every day or two.

Common mistake: Letting the puddler dry out completely. Butterflies need consistent moisture, so check it daily in summer.

💡 Pro Tip: Place a flat stone in the center as a basking spot—butterflies love to warm up on sun-heated rocks.
