8. DIY Butterfly Feeder with a Colander and Sugar Water

8

An old colander becomes a spacious butterfly feeding station. The holes provide drainage and allow butterflies to access the nectar from multiple angles.

  • Materials: A clean colander, a piece of cotton cloth or a clean sponge, sugar water, string or wire.
  • Time: 10 minutes
  • Difficulty: Easy

Line the colander with a piece of cotton cloth or a sponge. Soak it with sugar water, then hang the colander from a branch or hook using string or wire. The holes in the colander allow excess liquid to drain, preventing drowning. Butterflies will land on the cloth and drink. You can also place a few overripe grapes or a slice of watermelon on top for variety.

Paint the colander with outdoor spray paint or wrap the handle with twine for a vintage look. If you don’t have a colander, a metal strainer or a mesh basket works the same way.

Common mistake: Using a colander with holes that are too large—butterflies can fall through. Choose one with small holes or line it with fine mesh.

💡 Pro Tip: Rinse the cloth daily in hot water to prevent mold and fermentation.
